Jamu (Balinese Wellness Elixir)

I live in Bali part of the year and this is a popular (and potent!) traditional wellness elixir with an abundance of health benefits, namely: anti-inflammatory, liver and kidney detoxification, and digestion.

I personally make this tonic in batches and start my day (after my daily cup of hot wanter and lemon) with a good shot or so, and find it remarkable for its improvement of digestion.

Approximately 2 servings

Ingredients

1/4 Cup Fresh Turmeric (skinned and chopped)

1/2 1-2inch Fresh Ginger (skinned and chopped)

2 cups Water

2T Raw Honey

Juice of 1 Lime

(Optional: Pinch of Black Pepper to enhance turmeric's curcumin absorbency)

Method

Use a spoon to remove skin from fresh turmeric and ginger, and chop coarsely.

Add the chopped turmeric and ginger, raw honey and lime juice to a blender (I use a Vitamix). Add 1 cup of water (reserve the other half). Blend until liquid.

Strain the liquid. Discard pulp. Add to liquid the other remaining 1 cup of water. Stir and taste, adjust sweetness if needed with additional raw honey.
